Successful pilot test with major bank in Singapore as adopter

the introduction

Over half of employees (51%) care deeply about working for companies with strong environmental, social, and ethical values.

Attracting and retaining top talent, particularly among millennials and Gen Z, requires engaging purpose-driven employees. We thought the previous design did not effectively communicate Earthwallet’s features and benefits and appeared outdated.

I designed a proof of concept of a green employee engagement app where employees can use their company rewards to fuel real-world projects around the globe, watch their contributions grow on the ground, and share the impact with their friends.

This POC was aimed to showcase to major banks in Singapore to be the adopter where they can make real and major impact

the challenge

The first usability test was not successful due to poor usability and accesibility and lack of trustworthy data points

The first usability test was not successful

In early client tests, users were unhappy because the product was hard to use, not accessible, and the copy relied on jargon without credible data points

the approach

How might we make it fun and meaningful for millenials and gen-z employees to pledge to a sustainabilty project?

How might we make it fun and meaningful for millenials and gen-z employees to pledge to a sustainabilty project?

Using user feedback plus our impact data, I worked with Product, Content, Engineering, and Impact to establish these proof-of-concept focuses.

the solutions

Make it an informed and purposeful browsing experience

Understanding our client’s needs, I designed a homepage that lets users explore impact projects worldwide, filtering by SDGs, country, or project type. From there, they can dive into goals, mission, and team details before spending their Earthpoints provided by employers.

Ensuring fund reach the right project so employees can pledge more

To ensure transparency and avoid greenwashing, I worked closely with Impact Officers to design a dashboard with detailed views of contributions and pledges towards the real curated project around the globe, motivating employees to expand their impact.

Make it easy for pledgers to share their pledge and impact so it resonates with their audience

Believing in social media’s power to inspire good, I worked closely with the Content and Brand teams to design shareable image cards using easy to understand terminology and icons to celebrate impact when a pledge is completed, a project progresses, or funding is finished, so users can easily share their wins with friends and family

the impact

Paved the way for bigger impact in the future

Paved the way for bigger impact in the future

We piloted the redesigned interface with representatives from a major Singapore bank, who loved the idea and agreed to a new partnership to grow their employee engagement program, with hopes of involving more banks in the future.

the learning

Designing for impact requires collaboration

I learned to work closely and early with stakeholders such as Content, Impact, and the Product Owner; combining client feedback with their expertise and context to help me make informed design decisions.

I also got hands-on in translating the complex and ambiguous concepts of pledges and impact into designs that are simple, clear, and relatable for all users.
